The purpose of this event was to consider the report of the London Finance Commission and its potential impact on the capital. The report was commissioned by the Mayor of London and was published in May. Against the backdrop of a fast-rising population and consequent infrastructure needs, the Commission proposed that London’s sub-national government
should have greater control over local tax-raising, and a wider tax-base.
Tony Travers, who chaired the LFC, presented its findings. Responses and discussion were from Professor Henry Overman, Director of the Spatial Economics Research Centre at LSE, Hugh Grover, Director of Fair Funding, Performance & Procurement at London Councils and Jill Rutter, Programme Director, Institute for Government.
